Shift-Worker Recovery Protocol

The Nervous System Reset

Clinical Framework: Thomas Golden, MSN, FNP-C, ENP-C

High-acuity clinical work forces the brain into a chronic state of sympathetic dominance. You aren't just "tired"; your nervous system is stuck in a loop of high alert that prevents physical and mental recovery.

Protocol 01: The Physiological Sigh

Use this: Immediately after a high-stress trauma surge or as you sit in your car post-shift.

  1. Inhale deeply through the nose until your lungs are nearly at capacity.
  2. Take a second, sharp inhale at the very top to pop open the alveoli.
  3. Exhale slowly through the mouth with a long, controlled sigh.
  4. Repeat 3 times.

The Clinical Advantage: This protocol rapidly offloads CO2 and triggers the vagus nerve, signaling the parasympathetic system to "flip the switch" to rest and digest.
